I never thought I’d say this: I miss going to the office every day.
Yes, I do realize that statement is laden with enormous privilege. Unlike grocery store workers, restaurant workers, bus drivers, public health workers, health care professionals, and even my beat reporter and photographer colleagues who put their safety at risk every day, I am lucky to be (mostly) confined to my dining room table. I will not complain.
But for parents or people who live in particularly chaotic houses, there’s an emergency option for getting out of the home office: two Hyatts in Portland (the brand-new Hyatt Centric downtown, as well as the Hyatt near the convention center) are offering an “Office for a Day” promotion, renting out rooms “within traditional office hours.”
I emailed Justin Evans, director of sales and marketing at Hyatt, who told me the promotion has seen “positive traction” both in Portland and globally. Presumably that’s marketing speak for something less than a smashing success but more than nothing.
“We have found our guests are looking for an opportunity to break out of their current routines,” he writes. “We have seen everything from your traditional business traveler, to people just looking to escape their routine, even if only for a couple of hours.”
Of course, it’s not cheap. As of this writing, a 12-hour stay (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.) on a Wednesday later this month will set you back $85. That rate includes a discount on parking, wi-fi access, use of the printers, coffee, tea, and water, and certain office supplies “on request.” The hotel will also give you a yoga mat in the room, and access to the popular meditation app Headspace.
It’s tempting, but it’s also False Spring and the weather is temporarily getting much, much nicer. Lugging my laptop to the park right now is totally free.
